Dry Scalp Treatment

Dry scalp is a common condition that affects young and old, black and white. Although dry scalp can be a symptom of a couple of true medical conditions that require the attention of a physician or dermatologist, much of the time it is caused by something in your environment, and can be easily cured with the help of a home made dry scalp treatment.

Dry Scalp Treatment Home

Before deciding on the correct home treatment for your dry scalp,
you need to be sure that it isn't something more serious. Although itchiness and a tight feeling are normal, and something you can take care of easily yourself, there are other symptoms that should send you to a dermatologist or physician.

If your scalp is inflamed and red, or if you have scaling and scabs forming, forego the home remedies and seek medical treatment.

Beyond these more serious symptoms, dry scalp can be caused by the chemicals in your shampoo, over-exposure to styling tools like blow dryers and flat-irons, exposure to the sun, and the drying effect of heating and air conditioning. In all of these cases, home remedies can cure the problem.

Dry Scalp Treatment Olive Oil

One of the most effective treatments for dry scalp uses olive oil.
Olive oil has long been known for its ability to provide deep moisture to dry skin areas.

To make the most of its attributes, heat about half a cup of the oil in a small bowl. Be careful not to make it too hot, as it can cause severe scalding. Once it is a comfortably warm temperature, massage small amounts into your hair until your scalp is completely saturated. Use a wide-toothed comb to comb it through your hair, then don a shower cap or wrap your head in a towel and let it sit for twenty minutes. Rinse with cool water, then shampoo well afterwards.

There are other ingredients that you can mix with the olive oil to enhance its effectiveness; adding either lemon or lime juice will fight bacteria, and honey is commonly mixed with the olive oil before heating to contribute to its moisturizing effect.

Dry Scalp Treatment Products

There are many
other food products that have proven to be excellent treatments for dry scalp. These include yogurt mixed with an egg yolk, a combination of 2 Tablespoons each of soft bean curd and honey mixed with 4 Tablespoons of lemon juice, and raw coconut oil.

A variety of herbed oils have proven to be very soothing; they include rosemary, lavender, marjoram, mallow root, parsley seed, and nasturtium, as well as Vitamin E oil.

Dry Scalp Treatment Vinegar

Your dry scalp may well be
caused by a buildup of hair care products such as gels and mousses. These chemicals can block your pores and prevent the release of sebum, the body's lubricant that moisturizes your scalp.

If this is the case, the best cure is cleansing and toning. Chopping up four ounces of watercress and letting it soak for a week in four ounces of distilled alcohol, then mixing in a teaspoon of herbal oil, creates a great medicinal toner.

A little diluted apple cider vinegar used as a rinse after your shampoo is a powerful agent for dealing with stubborn buildup. It also has antibacterial properties similar to citrus juice, which will help prevent itch.

Aloe Vera juice will do the same thing, and moisturize as well, but make sure that you purchase the juice that has no sugar if you're going to use it as a leave-in conditioner.
